"Structured data" and "schema markup" show up constantly in anything written about AI search, including several of our own posts on this. What rarely gets explained is what either term actually means, or why AI tools in particular lean on it so heavily. Here's a plain-English answer.
What Are Structured Data and Schema Markup?
Most of a webpage is written for a person to read: paragraphs, headings, a phone number sitting somewhere in the footer text. A human can look at that and understand it instantly. A computer has to guess, and guessing means room for error.
Structured data is a way of stating facts about a page in a format built for machines to read directly, with no guessing required. Instead of a phone number sitting inside a sentence, it's labelled explicitly as a phone number. Instead of a search engine inferring that a page is about a specific service in a specific town, that's stated outright in a format it can parse with certainty.
How Are the Two Terms Actually Different?
Schema markup is the specific vocabulary used to write structured data, based on a shared standard called schema.org, maintained jointly by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Yandex so that structured data means the same thing everywhere it's used. In practice, "structured data" and "schema markup" are used almost interchangeably: schema markup is the format, structured data is what you're producing by using it.
The modern way to add it is a block of code called JSON-LD, sitting quietly in a page's source without affecting how the page looks to a visitor. It's written once, for machines, and has no visible presence on the page a person actually sees.
Why AI Tools Rely on It Even More Than Search Engines Used To
Traditional search engines could get away with inferring a lot from ordinary page text, because a ranked link was just a starting point: the person clicking through would work out the details themselves. An AI tool generating a direct answer doesn't have that safety net. It's stating something as fact, often without the reader ever visiting the page it came from, so it needs to be right the first time.
That's exactly what structured data is built for. A page that explicitly states its business name, address, phone number, opening hours and service area in schema markup gives an AI system very little room to misread or misstate them. A page relying entirely on prose leaves far more to interpretation, and interpretation is where the wrong-information problem we've covered elsewhere in this AI Search Optimisation series tends to creep in.
Which Schema Types Matter Most for a Local Business
A handful of types cover most of what actually matters:
- LocalBusiness or Organization, stating your name, address, phone number and opening hours as explicit facts, not just page text.
- Service, describing what you offer and the areas you serve.
- Review and AggregateRating, structuring your reviews and overall rating rather than leaving them as unstructured text.
- FAQPage, marking up question-and-answer content so it can be lifted out and used directly, tying closely into what we've covered on Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO).
- BreadcrumbList, making a site's structure and hierarchy explicit rather than implied by navigation alone.
None of these are exotic. Most are aimed squarely at the kind of business information that already sits somewhere on an ordinary website, just not yet in a form a machine can read with confidence.
Can You Add This Yourself?
Technically, yes, though in practice it usually sits with whoever builds or maintains your website rather than something to bolt on in an afternoon. It needs to be accurate, kept in sync with the real content on the page, and tested properly, since broken or contradictory markup can do more harm than having none at all. Does Structured Data Guarantee You'll Be Cited by AI Tools?
No, and we wouldn't claim otherwise. It removes ambiguity, it doesn't manufacture trust or authority out of nothing. A page still needs to be genuinely relevant, well-written and worth citing. What structured data does is make sure that once a page has earned that trust, an AI tool can state the facts about it correctly, instead of confidently getting them wrong.
