If you've searched Google recently, you'll have seen it: an AI-written summary sitting above the normal list of blue links, answering your question directly instead of leaving you to click through and find it yourself. These AI Overviews are now one of the biggest changes to how Google search actually looks and behaves in years.
Here's what AI Overviews are, how they're put together, and what they actually mean if you run a business website.
What Is a Google AI Overview?
An AI Overview is a short, AI-generated summary that Google shows at the top of certain search results, above the traditional organic listings. Instead of scanning ten separate pages to piece together an answer, the searcher gets a synthesised response drawing on several sources at once, usually with a handful of linked citations underneath it.
It's a genuinely different layout from anything Google used before. A featured snippet pulls one answer from one page. An AI Overview pulls from several pages and writes something new out of them, which is a meaningfully different job for a website to be considered for.
How Do AI Overviews Actually Work?
Google's system identifies a set of pages that already rank well for the search, reads across them, and generates a summary in its own words rather than quoting any single source verbatim. The pages it draws on most heavily tend to appear as linked citations near the summary, so being cited is still visible and still sends some traffic, just not in the traditional "rank first, get the click" way.
Because the summary is generated from pages that were already ranking, ordinary search visibility hasn't stopped mattering, it's become a precondition. A page Google can't already find, trust and rank has very little chance of being drawn into an Overview in the first place.
Which Searches Actually Show One?
Not every search triggers an AI Overview, and Google hasn't published an exact rulebook for which ones do. In practice they show up more often for questions, comparisons, "how to" searches and anything where pulling information together from a few sources is more useful than a single link. They're also increasingly common on searches with local or commercial intent, the kind a business owner would recognise as their own customers' searches.
This changes often as Google adjusts the feature, so treat any specific pattern as a general tendency rather than a fixed rule.
What This Means If You Run a Business Website
The most immediate effect is fewer clicks on searches where an Overview fully answers the question, even for a page that would have ranked first under the old layout. That's a real shift, and it's worth being honest about rather than dismissing.
The flip side is that being cited inside an AI Overview is a different, and in some ways stronger, kind of visibility than a normal blue link. A searcher sees your business named directly inside the answer Google itself is giving, alongside a small number of others, rather than as one option among ten. Fewer businesses get that spot, but the ones that do are seen differently.
How Do You Get Cited in an AI Overview?
There's no separate technical trick for AI Overviews specifically. The pages that get pulled into them are, almost without exception, pages that already rank well through solid, ordinary SEO: clear structure, genuinely useful content, and enough authority for Google to trust as a source.
On top of that foundation, the same groundwork covered in Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) applies directly here: structured data that makes your content easy to parse, and answers written clearly enough to be lifted and used accurately. AI Overviews are one of the clearest real-world examples of why that groundwork matters, not a separate thing to learn on top of it.
Can You Check If You're Already Appearing in One?
Yes, and it takes a few minutes. Search Google for the kind of question your own customers would ask and see whether an Overview appears, and if it does, whether your business is one of the cited sources. We've written a full walkthrough in how to check your AI search visibility, which covers AI Overviews alongside ChatGPT and Perplexity in one go.
AI Overviews are still changing regularly, and we won't pretend there's a fixed playbook that guarantees a spot in one. What we can say is that the businesses already doing solid SEO, with clean structure and genuinely useful content, are the ones best placed to be pulled into an Overview as Google keeps expanding where it shows them. If you want an honest read on where your own site stands, that's exactly what our AI Search Optimisation service is built to check, and we'll tell you plainly if it's worth pursuing or not.
